Seminary Students Meet Academics

The URL Project hosted its first practitioners’ workshop. A number of students from Jamiatul Ilm Wal Huda (The College of Islamic Knowledge and Guidance) visited both the Universities of Cardiff and Exeter. The workshop was a great occasion to explore the possibilities of how academics and practitioners can interact and discuss the same topics from different approaches. It included a full programme of academic activities which gave the visiting students a good taste of what university-based study of Islam looks like. After visiting the Centre for the Study of Islam in Cardiff on Wednesday 08 Feb, the next day in Exeter began with presentations from PhD students about their research and questions from the audience. Following a campus tour, Dr Tayyeb Mimouni led a discussion with the students on a seminal academic article in the field of Islamic law. Professor Rob Gleave presented a classical text in Islamic law and engaged with students about different aspects of the text. Finally, there was time for the seminary students to have tea and socialise with the University students and staff.

Our thanks go to all who attended the workshop and assisted in its organisation.
