Seminary Students Meet Academics

The URL Project hosted its first practitioners’ workshop. A number of students from Jamiatul Ilm Wal Huda (The College of Islamic Knowledge and Guidance) visited both the Universities of Cardiff and Exeter. The workshop was a great occasion to explore the possibilities of how academics and practitioners can interact and discuss the same topics from different approaches. Al-Mahdi Institute visit – 13th December 2016

Drs Tayyeb Mimouni and Mustafa Baig conducted their first visit to a Shi‘a institute to observe any distinct features of training Shi’a jurists. They had the opportunity to meet some of the students and learn about their personal experiences and motivations for attending courses in Islamic studies. The director of the Institute, Shaykh Arif Abdul Hussain, was interviewed about his thoughts on issuing fatwas in a specifically British context.

Blackburn Dar al-‘Ulum Visit – 2nd November 2016

Professor Rob Gleave along with Drs Tayyeb Mimouni and Mustafa Baig visited the Jami’at al-‘Ilm wa’l-Huda in Blackburn. They observed Mufti training classes in the Institute and addressed the assembly. Discussions were held with some of the teachers of the Institute. The day ended with a discussion on a text in Islamic law with final year students of the Institute, to give them an insight into how such texts are approached in academic settings.
