Thursday 30th March 2017 the University of Exeter will host the Eighth Understanding Religion and Law Workshop

The Understanding Religion and Law project will be hosting the eighth and final workshop on Thursday 30th March at the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies, University of Exeter.  The project is led by Professors Rob Gleave (Exeter), Julian Rivers (Bristol), Sophie Gilliat-Ray (Cardiff) and Dr Mustafa Baig (Exeter). Seminary Students Meet Academics

The URL Project hosted its first practitioners’ workshop. A number of students from Jamiatul Ilm Wal Huda (The College of Islamic Knowledge and Guidance) visited both the Universities of Cardiff and Exeter. The workshop was a great occasion to explore the possibilities of how academics and practitioners can interact and discuss the same topics from different approaches. Cardiff University host Seventh Understanding Religion & Law Workshop Monday 6th February 2017

This was the penultimate URL workshop. It opened with a more extensive session on the British fatwas and muftis projects with updates and future plans. There were contributions from all  involved in the project, each highlighting distinct areas of the project. There were also stimulating papers on blasphemy laws and organ transplantation with respect to UK laws and Islamic law. University of Bristol host Sixth Understanding Religion & Law Workshop 19th December 2016

The University of Bristol hosted the sixth Understanding Religion and Law workshop. A number of scholars and PhD students gathered to discuss and shared ideas around a set of fascinating papers. Tuesday 8th November 2016 Understanding Religion & Law Fifth Workshop

The first of the second round of URL workshops (fifth overall) took place at the University of Exeter. After providing an update on the Muftis and Fatwas in the UK project, various papers covered issues surrounding law and religion from perspectives including Muslim-Christian relations, religion in a post-secular age as well as Pesian and Pashtun contexts. Thursday 28th January 2016 Understanding Religion and Law Third Workshop

Russell Sandford, of The Univesrity of Cardiff Law School, hosted our 3rd workshop on 28th January 2016.  Buddhism, Christianity and Islam, and how they conceptualise “law” formed the main topic of conversation.  Professor Ebrahim Moosa (Notre Dame University) – a leader in contemporary Muslim theological and legal developments in the US – gave our third public lecture on Slavery and Contemporary Islamic legal reform. Second Understanding Religion and Law Workshop in Devon

The Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies at the University of Exeter was the venue for the second workshop, on 10th December 2015 – with 5 papers from participants from Bristol, Cardiff and Exeter, the accommodation of religion in legal structures was the main focus of our discussions.  These were brought together with a lecture by the leading Dutch scholar on religion and law, Professor Leon van den Broeke.
